Dog Paw Summer Safety

How many of you think about surface temperatures (not air temperatures) when you walk your pets?

We did a little experiment today, taking samples of surface temperatures as the sun angle increased and temperatures rose into the 90s. As you can see, blacktop warms much faster and hotter than other surfaces. Even grass, and especially dry ground, can rise into the 100s.

It’s important to always walk your pet early in the morning or in the evening when the sun angle is lowest/decreasing and when air and surface temperatures are cooler.

Remember: If the pavement or surface is too hot for you to stand on barefoot, it’s much too warm for your pet and their paws.
